Northern Borders: A Haven to Ancient Archaeological Treasures

Saudi Arabia’s Northern Borders region boasts a vast array of archaeological sites, indicating a rich history of human settlement that dates back to ancient times, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

Among the most remarkable sites that offer deep glimpses into the area’s civilizations are the stone structures dispersed northwest of Arar.

These structures have different shapes, sizes, and designs, with data noting that they stretch back to the late Neolithic period and the beginning of subsequent eras.

Archaeologists believe that they likely served as stone burial chambers, built to preserve the remains of the deceased.

Director General of Antiquities at the Heritage Commission, Ajab Al-Otaibi, said that the stone structures and rock art sites in the Northern Borders region are a pivotal part of Saudi Arabia’s national cultural heritage. They also act as a significant resource for both archaeological scholarship and scientific research.

He also emphasized the significance of ongoing survey, documentation and conservation efforts to protect these cultural landmarks.

Moreover, the region boasts several significant rock art sites, including Shu’ayb Hamer, which features a wide range of drawings carved into natural rock surfaces, standing out as a key location for documenting early human activity in the area.

The carvings depict human figures as well as a variety of animals, such as camels, horses and gazelles, along with different wild and predatory species that have long since disappeared from the region.
