“Abu Al-Houl” Mountain… Archaeological Landmark Embraced by Aja Mountain Range in Hail

In the village of Aba Al-Hiran, located 120 kilometers southwest of the Hail region, a notable historical and tourist landmark known as “Abu Al-Houl” (The Sphinx) can be found.

This area, set amidst the unique and diverse geological formations of the renowned Aja Mountains, attracts numerous visitors and tourists from both within the Kingdom and abroad. They come to marvel at the details of this sculpted figure, which resembles a human head, and to explore the rich formations surrounding the mountain.

Over the years, natural erosion and weathering, possibly combined with ancient human intervention, have shaped this remarkable feature, making it a must-see destination.

Mashari Al-Nashmi

Mashari Al-Nashmi, a researcher in ancient astronomy and rock formations, explained that the Abha al-Hiran site, including “Sphinx Mountain,” shows many forms of erosion caused by rainwater and humidity over the decades. This erosion has created rock sculptures with different shapes and drawings visible from various distances. He emphasized the need for intensive astronomical and geological studies to uncover more secrets and answer visitors’ questions about the unique formations and their varying heights.

Ha’il region

The Ha’il region stands out for its diverse heritage tourist sites, highlighted by the petroglyph site in “Al-Shuways,” one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Kingdom and globally. It is among the largest open-air museums of petroglyphs in the Arabian Peninsula, dating back to the Neolithic period. Additionally, Mount Umm Sinman boasts over five thousand petroglyphs from the seventh millennium BCE, contributing to the region’s status as a notable local and international tourist attraction.
