Exceptional Opening for 2026 World Cup with 3 Ceremonies and a Historic Artistic Event at Final

Football fans around the world are turning their attention this Thursday evening to the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, where the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off with an exceptional opening ceremony ahead of the match between Mexico and South Africa.

The current edition features several historic firsts. For the first time, the tournament is being hosted by three countries—the United States, Mexico, and Canada. It will also feature three separate opening ceremonies, with each host nation staging its own celebration in conjunction with its first match of the tournament.

The festivities begin in the Mexican capital, where Azteca Stadium—renamed “Estadio Ciudad de México” for the tournament—will host the first opening ceremony before Mexico faces South Africa in the opening match.

Mexican authorities have given the event extraordinary attention. They announced the suspension of classes in schools and universities and requested that government employees work from home to ease the expected traffic congestion in the capital, which is known for its dense population and busy roadways.

These measures are intended to facilitate crowd movement and ensure smooth access to the stadium on a day expected to draw a massive attendance.

The opening ceremony is scheduled to begin 90 minutes before kickoff. Artistic and entertainment performances will start at 11:30 a.m. local time (17:30 GMT), while the match itself will begin at 1:00 p.m. local time (19:00 GMT).

Colombian superstar Shakira will headline the event, performing the official 2026 World Cup song, “Day Day,” alongside Nigerian star Burna Boy in one of the ceremony’s most anticipated segments.

The entertainment lineup extends beyond Shakira and Burna Boy, featuring a wide range of prominent Latin American and international artists, including Alejandro Fernández, Belinda, J Balvin, Danny Ocean, Lila Downs, Los Ángeles Azules, Maná, and South African singer Tyla.

This musical diversity reflects the global character of the tournament, as organizers aim to present a show that blends Mexican culture, Latin rhythms, and international influences in a celebration befitting the World Cup’s status as the world’s largest sporting event.

Hours after the competition begins in Mexico, the celebrations will move to Canada and the United States.

In Toronto, Canada will host its own opening ceremony on Friday before a match involving Bosnia and Herzegovina, featuring performers such as Michael Bublé, Alessia Cara, Alanis Morissette, Jessie Reyez, and Nora Fatehi.

The United States will hold its own celebration at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, which will be known as “Los Angeles Stadium” during the tournament in accordance with FIFA regulations regarding commercial sponsors.

The ceremony will take place before the United States–Paraguay match, scheduled for early Saturday morning GMT, and will feature performers including Katy Perry, Lisa, Anitta, Future, Rema, and Tyla.

Stadium gates will open hours before kickoff, with entertainment activities, interactive experiences, musical performances, and live fan programs organized as part of efforts to transform opening matchdays into full-scale sports and cultural festivals.

The innovations do not end with the opening ceremonies. The tournament will also feature an unprecedented event: a halftime show during the final match—the first such performance in World Cup history.

FIFA and the organization Global Citizen have announced that Madonna, Shakira, and BTS will headline this historic show, inspired by the famous halftime performances at major American sporting events, particularly the Super Bowl.

As the countdown to kickoff continues, fans appear set for an extraordinary opening that combines football, music, and spectacle, paving the way for what is expected to be one of the most memorable and exciting World Cup editions in history.
