Cannes Film Festival to ‘Honor’ Slain Gazan Photojournalist

The Cannes Film Festival announced that it would honor Gaza photojournalist Fatima Hassouna by screening her documentary next month after her demise in an Israeli airstrike on Gaza, according to Arab News.

An Israeli airstrike on Gaza has recently killed Hassouna, who documented everyday life under blockade in Gaza.

Before her death, Hassouna cooperated with Iranian filmmaker Sepideh Farsi to produce Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk, a documentary embodying people’s life in Gaza during Israel’s ongoing genocide.

The Israeli airstrike that targeted Hassouna’s family home in Gaza came just a day after Acid, a Cannes sidebar dedicated to independent cinema, unveiled the selection of her work. Moreover, the attack killed nine of her family members.

“If I die, I want a loud death. I don’t want to be in a breaking news story, nor in a number with a group. I want a death that is heard by the world, a trace that lasts forever, and immortal images that neither time nor place can bury,” Hassouna wrote this post before her death.

“Her smile was as magical as her tenacity: bearing witness, photographing Gaza, distributing food despite bombs, grief and hunger. Her story reached us, and we rejoiced at each of her appearances to know she was alive; we feared for her. Yesterday, we learnt with horror that an Israeli missile targeted her building,” Acid wrote on social media.
