The Saudi Film Commission has launched a promising initiative through the National Film Archive to collect and archive more than 1,000 Saudi and Arab films, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
Film Deposit Initiative will basically collect films from filmmakers, private and public sector institutions.
The initiative aims at strengthening the Kingdom’s status as a premier hub for film production in the heart of the Middle East.
It began with establishing the Saudi Film Registry, which contains data of over 1,000 films, including feature films and documentaries, both long and short. Furthermore, it has set the highest standards and guidelines for film deposits to ensure that intellectual and literary property rights are in line with the submitting entities.
Film Deposit ensures the preservation of national cultural heritage through three main paths:
- Deposit for secure storage
- Deposit with research access for scholarly study
- Deposit with public availability for general access
These paths are designed to motivate interest among researchers, cinema enthusiasts, and the general public.
