Toronto International Film Festival Selects Saudi-Backed ‘Sudan, Remember Us’

The Toronto International Film Festival has selected “Sudan, Remember Us,” film, directed by Hind Meddeb, to participate in the festival’s Docs section, reported Arab News.

Supported by the Red Sea Film Foundation, the film depicts the events in Khartoum during spring 2019, starting with the defiance of young Sudanese activists after the overthrow of the dictatorship and documenting the military campaign that followed. Furthermore, it tackles the stories of Sudanese revolutionaries Shajane, Muzamil, Maha, Rufaida, Hamza and Eros.

“Sudan, Remember Us,” intended from the very beginning to provide a voice to the countless anonymous revolutionaries who sacrificed their lives to challenge military dictatorship and fulfill their dreams of freedom, equality and real change.

In April 2019, filmmaker Hind Meddeb traveled to the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, at a critical moment in the Sudanese history. The dictator Omar al-Bashir had recently been ousted after a 30-year regime described by genocidal violence in Darfur.

Meddeb commenced filming with young activists who sought a citizen government and organized sit-ins, composing music, reciting poetry, and painting murals. The shots reflected their hopes of social freedom and justice, all expressed in signs that read “Sudan free of tribalism” and “Religious pluralism.” “Bullets don’t kill,” says one young man. “What kills is people’s silence.”

The film marks the fourth feature by Meddeb after Electro ChaabiTunisia Clash and Paris Stalingrad, of which the latter won best international director at New Zealand’s Doc Edge Festival in 2020.

The festival will commence on Sept. 5 and conclude on 15. The full schedule is set to be published on Aug. 13.
