Dynamic Wardrobe: Fashion Identity vs. Fashion Uniform

By: Ranim Elgabakhngi

Normally, your clothes will represent your inner self, nevertheless, they can also disguise you by conforming to the standards. At times, clothes loudly express distinctiveness; however, they just as well silently blend into the crowd – influenced by place, time, and intention. Fashion is a non-verbal form of communication but its interpretation depends on the reason for the choice.

Personal Expression

Wear is one of the ways through which a person can express oneself without uttering a single word. Something a person wears may reveal to others his/her origin, faith, or even aspirations. Clothing is a medium of communication that can express something much more than just the functionality of clothes. People, instead of merely continuing the trend, select the certain pieces of the outfit, which are their trademark. When that happens, fashion is more than fabric – it is a reflection of one’s inner self, through one’s gestures and decisions.

Social Conformity

Among the remarkable thing is that sometimes attire disguises each one as part of a crowd rather than differentiating them. Consider school uniforms or work dress codes – basically, they level down one’s features, which is what makes two different people or beings look the same. One can find it simpler to identify with a certain group when the members of that group who have pretty much the same look. Focus is maintained on the work, not on the styles, as the appearance is determined by shared functions. Personal preferences are subordinate, whereas group consciousness takes precedence.

The Tension Between

Everyday choices are shaped by a push and a pull. Sometimes the desire to be different is at odds with the need to fit in – for example, deciding to wear a bold colorful outfit while office dress code rules favor gray suits. Clothes illustrate the tactic humans use to express their individuality and at the same time to belong: they compromise a bit here and a bit there to seem genuine without being too out of place.

Cultural Implications

The struggle to distinguish oneself and to conform is reflected most clearly in people’s clothes. Sometimes clothes cast a person’s individuality in the most conspicuous way possible, like a flag on a hilltop. There are also times when one has to be in the shadow, blending in with the group like birds in flight. Clothes frequently reveal the most deeply rooted values of a society- whether it is the liberty to be different, the pursuit of peace through sameness, or the desire of being first and foremost a member of the group.

Liberties and rules both have origins in the same source, and in this case, it is fabric. Our clothing determines which of these is expressed. When garments are worn with great affirmation, they reveal one’s identity; however, if they are dressed quietly, the individuals become a part of the ordinary unnoticed crowd. Every attire somehow reflects the individual’s perception of their position in the world, it also reflects how others see them.
