The Riyadh Municipality illuminated buildings, roads, and public squares in green light to mark Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) Day, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
The green celebration served as a vibrant tribute to the city’s commitment to sustainability, highlighting how environmental goals are directly improving the community’s quality of life.
Observed annually on March 27, SGI Day is a national occasion focused on promoting a culture of sustainability. It aligns with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 of supporting nationwide efforts to expand vegetation cover and restore the Kingdom’s ecological balance.

These green displays convey a visual message about a comprehensive environmental transformation. They represent a unified push to preserve natural resources, reduce emissions, and raise public awareness. These efforts are also essential to building sustainable cities and solidifying Saudi Arabia’s role as a global leader in conservation.
The 2026 celebrations also highlighted major green milestones. The National Greening Program has successfully rehabilitated one million hectares of degraded land, in a key stride toward reversing desertification, enhancing the environment’s resilience against climate change, as well as beautifying the landscape for residents.
Furthermore, the Kingdom saw more than 159 million trees planted over the past year, while natural reserves witnessed the birth of Arabian oryx calves for the third consecutive year.

Moreover, the National Water Efficiency and Conservation Center now saves 120,000 cubic meters of water daily, with a target to reach 300,000 cubic meters in the near future.
Launched by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in March 2021, the Saudi Green Initiative focuses on three primary pillars: guiding the Kingdom toward net-zero emissions by 2060, driving a comprehensive green transformation, and ensuring the long-term protection of Saudi Arabia’s land and sea.
