Watermelon Tops Saudi Arabia’s Summer Fruit Production at More Than 620,000 Tons Annually

Watermelon remains Saudi Arabia’s leading summer fruit crop, with annual production exceeding 620,000 tons. Demand for the fruit peaks during the summer months, driven by its refreshing qualities, nutritional value, and growing use in food-processing industries.

As part of its campaign to promote seasonal fruits across the Kingdom, the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture said watermelon is cultivated extensively in several regions, including Riyadh, Makkah, the Eastern Region, Al-Jouf, Al-Baha, Madinah, Qassim, Tabuk, Hail, Aseer, and Jazan. The widespread cultivation helps meet domestic demand during the summer season.
According to the ministry, watermelon is well suited to a range of climatic conditions and is produced in multiple varieties that differ in size, color, and flavor. The crop also contributes to food security and supports economic diversification efforts under Saudi Vision 2030.
The sector continues to benefit from government support through agricultural extension services, financing programs, the adoption of modern farming technologies, and initiatives aimed at strengthening marketing channels and supply chains.
