The Saudi Research and Media Group (SRMG) has amazed the audience at the inaugural edition of Art Week Riyadh with a stunning collection exploring the evolution of Saudi abstraction, according to Arab News.
SRMG’s exhibition was part of “Collections in Dialogue,” a flagship exhibition displaying fascinating works by the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) and Hayy Jameel.
Titled “Abstract Horizons,” the collection displayed the notable artworks of various artists including Mohammed Al-Saleem and Abdulhalim Radwi who had laid the foundation of Saudi Arabia’s contemporary art movement.
Through the abstract practices of three generations of Saudi artists, the exhibition focused on the changing aesthetic and intellectual currents of the Kingdom.
To this end, the exhibition traces back the early beginnings of those artists born in the 1930s and 1940s, whose artworks initially emerged in the 1990s.
Radwi founded modernism movement in Saudi Arabia, meanwhile Al-Saleem established the “horizonism” movement.
Consequently, Al-Saleem has introduced various artworks exploring the geometric depiction of the Saudi skyline and desertscape.
Then, abstraction has transformed into a crucial language in the cultural scene.
Importantly, the exhibition also highlighted the themes of culture, identity and memory with several works from the early 2000s.
For instance, Abdulrahman Al-Soliman has offered an exceptional mix between architectural elements and heritage and contemporary expression.
Apart from this, Abdullah Hamas has reimagined the Kingdom’s landscape through geometric compositions.
The collection also highlights the central role of Raeda Ashour as one of the first female Saudi abstract artists, who depends on a minimalist yet evocative approach in her work.
