Darah Launches Book on Environmental History in the Kingdom

The King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research and Archives (Darah) launched a new publication titled “The Environmental History of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: From the Brink of Extinction to the Royal Reserves,” authored by Dr. Abdullah bin Nasser Al-Welaie, at the Darah booth at the Riyadh International Book Fair 2024.
This book, published in three volumes, covers the history of environmental incidents in the Kingdom, the establishment of protected areas, and details Saudi Arabia’s efforts to preserve wildlife and combat desertification through the issuance of laws and regulations and the creation of supportive agencies and institutions for the environment.
It discusses the establishment of a system of protected areas in the Kingdom and their classifications, and it culminates with the issuance of royal orders to create reserves aimed at protecting the Kingdom’s biodiversity.
The book begins by discussing the geology and topography of the Kingdom, along with its climatic conditions in both the past and present.
It explores the various environments, including marine and terrestrial, as well as the plant and animal groups found in this blessed land, highlighting their patterns and diversity.
The publication of the book by Darah reflects its commitment to documenting, recording, and preserving the history of the Kingdom, recognizing the significance of the Kingdom’s environmental history and its efforts in environmental protection and care.
