Exploring Jeddah’s Timeless Markets, Caravanserais: Journey Through Heritage, History

Jeddah, once renowned for its vibrant markets and caravanserais, offers a glimpse into the city’s rich past.

The Qaisariya market was a lively center of interconnected shops. Among Jeddah’s most notable historical caravanserais were Khan Al-Qasbah (a fabric merchant), Khan Al-Dallaleen, and Khan Al-Attarin (perfumers).

The customs of Jeddah’s hospitable people continue to bring families and loved ones together. The tradition of decorating homes with lights and singing celebratory songs creates a unique and charming atmosphere that permeates all occasions in the central historical area.

Darah

The King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research and Archives (Darah), dedicated to preserving the history of Saudi cities and sites, has meticulously documented the history of Jeddah, focusing on its buildings, neighborhoods, markets, mashrabiyas and architectural features. Historic Jeddah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014, remains testament to the city’s rich heritage.

The foundation also has documented King Abdulaziz’s visit to Jeddah in 1925, and his temporary residence in Nassif House.
Jeddah, once a close-knit community centered around the sea, has evolved into a major city and a gateway to the two holy mosques in Makkah and Madinah.

  City’s Urban

The Saudi government has acknowledged the historical and cultural importance of Jeddah’s landmarks and architectural sites. In 2020, the Ministry of Culture launched the Jeddah Historic District program to restore and enhance the city’s urban, economic, social, cultural, historical, and environmental dimensions. This initiative aims to improve public facilities and services to better serve both residents and visitors.

Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, has generously supported the restoration of 56 historic buildings in Jeddah that were at risk of collapse, allocating SAR50 million from his personal funds. In 2021.

Tre prince also launched the Historic Jeddah Revival Project, which aims to revitalize the region’s spaces, promote cultural projects and enhance the visitor experience.

The government’s support for these projects reflects its dedication to preserving the Kingdom’s historical and cultural heritage. By restoring and safeguarding Jeddah’s historic buildings, the government seeks to turn them into internationally recognized landmarks and boost historical tourism in Saudi Arabia, in alignment with Vision 2030.
