The valley holds an ancient history and civilization documented by linguistic and literary sources. Historians have provided information about it, adding to the ancient heritage left by successive human civilizations on its land. Its land contains environmental and natural riches, as well as old stories, events, and scenes.

The professor of history and Islamic civilization, Saleh Al-Khalif, confirmed that Wadi Waj was the closest valley to Mecca in ancient times and had a direct connection with the residents through agricultural fields. He explained that a special relationship existed between the valley and the people since the time of the Quraysh and their alliances. He noted that the valley, the oldest in history, runs through Taif from southwest to northeast, with hundreds of small valleys flowing into it. The Thaqif tribe built a famous wall around their city, leading to the name Taif (al-Touf).

Khalif noted that Wadi Waj has long been known for its unique water irrigation system, which addresses water scarcity. Ancient water systems like springs and old wells, numbering in the hundreds, are famous in the valley. They show the region’s historical ability to manage water resources effectively.

Taif’s Water Resources

The Saudi Press Agency has monitored the flowing springs in the valleys of Taif, which are considered one of the landmarks in the development of Taif’s water resources. Some of these springs are located in the village of “Al-Wahat” to the southwest of Taif, extending along Wadi Waj (including the springs of Al-Muthna, Al-Salama, Al-Jal, and others). These springs are a natural source from which water flows throughout the year, providing irrigation for residents and farms, which have historically been and continue to be an economic resource for the local community.
