The Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Nature Reserve has achieved a remarkable milestone, becoming the first Saudi royal reserve to formally join UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Program, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
This international recognition reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to protecting its natural environments and solidifying its global position in biodiversity conversation and sustainable development.
Prince Turki bin Mohammed, the authority’s Chairman of the Board of Directors, said that this recognition is not only an environmental achievement but also a global testament to the Kingdom’s excellence in developing a unique national model for managing royal reserves.
The prince noted that this model blends the site’s authenticity with innovative conservation methods, crystalizing the concept of sustainable development.
Furthermore, he underscored that that the Saudi Crown Prince’s wise guidance and pivotal support have played a key role in the progress and development achieved in the Kingdom’s protected areas sector.
Launched in 1971, UNESCO‘s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Program focuses on developing the sustainable use of biodiversity and preserve ecosystems through strict scientific standards for nature reserves worldwide.
The program also seeks to enhance the relationship between people and their environment, track changes in the biosphere caused by human activity, and alleviate harmful impacts.
