With untouched wilderness, high mountain peaks and charming natural landscape, Aseer has captivated visitors around the world. Located on the Red Sea coast in the southwestern of Saudi Arabia, Aseer stands as a magical blend of hidden natural beauty and deeply rooted heritage.

Aseer is generally known as a rugged mountainous area, a fact that urged Saudi Arabia to turn this rugged beauty into a stunning tourist destination. Therefore, the Kingdom has built several iconic highways to make the region more accessible and easier to walk through.

Among these highways is Aqabat Shaar that captured the attention of residents and visitors with its breathtaking natural scenery and marvelous constructive design. A mere 23 kilometers from Abha city, the road through Aqabat Shaar links Sarat Aseer with the coastal plain of Tihama.

Saudi Arabia started the construction over 40 years ago under the reign of the late King Fahd bin Abdulaziz. Aqabat Shaar is considered as an engineering marvel as the project involved cutting through solid rock, building 11 tunnels, and erecting 32 bridges, to eventually construct a road approximately 14 kilometers long.

The Roads General Authority has recently implemented a comprehensive maintenance project to employ the latest cutting-edge technologies and meet the worldwide standards. As a result, the road underwent a temporary closure and reopened last year after ensuring safety and high-quality utility. Now Aqabat Shaar is fully equipped with modern lighting, clear road markings, informative signs, warning vibrations, floor markings and concrete barriers.
