Tesla Teases Imminent Launch of Autonomous Taxi “Cybercab”

Tesla, the electric vehicle manufacturer, has begun promoting the upcoming launch of its autonomous passenger vehicle, the “Cybercab,” aiming to compete with companies such as Uber and Waymo.

The company, founded by Elon Musk, posted an advertisement on social media on Friday offering a chance to experience the Cybercab at an exclusive event on September 3 in Austin, Texas, where Tesla’s headquarters are located.

“Join us as we celebrate the launch of the Cybercab autonomous taxi at an exclusive event in Austin… and you can be there,” the company said on its website, promoting a contest that gives participants a chance to win an invitation to the event.

Moreover, the gold-colored vehicle, first unveiled in October 2024, seats two passengers and is Tesla’s first car built entirely without a steering wheel or pedals.

Musk has stated that the company plans to begin production before 2027 and sell the vehicle to individuals for under $30,000.

In this context, U.S. technology news outlet The Information reported this week that Tesla employees were told the Cybercab launch would begin by offering the service to staff, followed by integrating the vehicle into an autonomous taxi fleet in Austin.

In recent weeks, Tesla watchers have reported spotting lots filled with Cybercabs, fueling speculation that an official launch is imminent.

Tesla launched its autonomous vehicles in Austin last year using the Model Y, gradually expanding the robotaxi service to other cities in Texas, Florida and California.

However, laws in these states require a human supervisor in most of these vehicles, ready to take control when necessary.

Waymo, Alphabet’s autonomous taxi company, currently offers its services in 11 U.S. cities.
