Greece’s parliament on Friday approved a bill banning children under the age of 15 from using social media platforms, amid growing concerns over their impact on minors’ health and safety. The ban is set to take effect on January 1, 2027, according to Reuters.
Australia was the first country to pass legislation restricting minors’ use of social media last year. France also approved a similar law, but the French Constitutional Council struck it down in August.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said social media platforms have two and a half months to develop a mechanism to verify users’ ages while protecting their privacy.
Greece is one of seven European Union countries working with the European Commission to find a solution for verifying users’ ages.

Greece says it stands with parents to help curb “endless scrolling,” which it says deprives children of sleep, concentration and time spent with friends.
