Online Safety: Essential Practices

By: Ranim Elgabakhngi

These days, throughout the web, opportunities for socializing, learning, or having fun appear without stop – however, dangers also accompany them. Usually, safety is a matter of having a clue about the simplest things before making a click. Folks’ assurance increases when they understand how their personal data can be leaked without their knowledge. Just a few habits are enough to create secure avenues in overpopulated networks.

Strong Passwords

The first thing a good password do is set a nice strong foundation to your online safety. Length matters – combine letters in uppercase, lowercase, numbers, so it is more challenging to break the password. Don’t use dictionary words or patterns like 1234 because these are too obvious. If one login is compromised, having different passwords for each site will keep the others protected.

Secure Connections

Beware which sites you trust when you type anything personal. Look at the browser address bar – it should show that the site is secure. Using internet at public places makes it possible for others to have access to your data. Do not log in to your accounts and do not share your personal information unless you have some extra security measures to keep it safe from prying eyes.

Phishing Awareness

If someone sends you a message asking for your personal info, don’t just give it. First, check carefully the supposedly sender’s name, there could be something strange. Genuine companies hardly ever ask for passwords without any reason. Whenever you see a link, make sure to hover your mouse over it first to see the real destination said link would lead you to, or just copy and paste it in a site that scans whether it is a safe go-to or not.

Software Updates

By keeping up with the latest updates of apps and the system, you will be denying the hackers the doors they usually use to get in. As much as possible, enable auto-updates so that you will get the fixes immediately. Have you got any old versions of softwares you’re not making a use of them anymore? Delete them. Hidden defects may eventually cause trouble.

Staying safe online is like always watching over the health of your device, taking security measures as a habit and not a one-time thing. People who stick to these steps regularly are the ones that generally most risks of the internet are unavailable to them without the internet being a loss to them. When carefulness goes hand in hand with wise decisions, online users get the best of both worlds – more safety and more freedom. The main thing is to keep doing it over and over again.
