Saudi Arabia Celebrates Flag Day 2025

Saudi Arabia marks its National Flag Day on Tuesday March 11, 2025, celebrating its national identity and unity.

Saudi Arabia observes this national occasion upon a royal decree by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, which designated March 11 of each year as the National Flag Day. It commemorates the approval of the current Saudi flag design by King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud on March 11, 1937.

Saudis across the Kingdom cherish the Saudi flag, which has become a symbol of dignity, unity and national pride. The flag is distinguished with its green color, symbolizing fertility, prosperity and growth.

It carries a white inscription of the Shahada (the Islamic declaration of faith: There is no God but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah) in the middle. A white sword features beneath the Shahada. The white color is a symbol of purity and peace.

The Saudi flag appeared for the first time during the reign of Imam Muhammad bin Saud, the founder of the First Saudi State in 1727. It was a square green banner carrying the Shahada, with a white vertical stripe at the hoist.

It went through some modifications until it took the current design: a rectangular-shaped banner, with the Shahada written in Thuluth script in the middle and one sword beneath it.

On March 11, 1937, King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud adopted the current design as the national flag of Saudi Arabia.
