Saudi Arabia will observe its Founding Day on February 22, 2025, celebrating a long journey of achievements that have placed the Kingdom among the world’s most prosperous nations.
On this occasion, the Saudi Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development announced Saturday, February 22, 2025, an official holiday for the private and non-profit sectors to celebrate Saudi Arabia’s Founding Day.
Saudi Founding Day
The Founding Day marks the anniversary of the establishment of the First Saudi State on the hands of Imam Muhammad bin Saud more than three centuries ago. In 1727, Imam Muhammad bin Saud became the ruler of Diriyah.

Aspiring to establish a political entity that achieves unity, stability and prosperity in the Arabian Peninsula, Imam Muhammad bin Saud took Diriyah as the capital of the state, with the Holy Quran and Prophet Mohammed’s Sunnah as its constitution. He succeeded in unifying large parts of the Arabian Peninsula under his rule, bringing stability to the region.
Diriyah: First Saudi State’s Capital
Under Imam Muhammad bin Saud’s rule, Diriyah transformed into a beacon of security, stability and prosperity. The ruler of the First Saudi State secured the routes of Hajj (pilgrimage) and trade, regulated and developed the economy, in addition to building fortified walls around Diriyah.
Moreover, Diriyah emerged as a center for commerce, culture and knowledge, becoming a destination for merchants, students and scholars.
Founding Day vs. National Day
Saudi Arabia celebrates two national occasions that demonstrate the Kingdom’s deeply-rooted history, culture and heritage: the Founding Day and the National Day. The Founding Day is marked on February 22 of each year, while the National Day is observed on September 23.

On the other hand, the Saudi National Day commemorates the unification of Najd and Hejaz under the name Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by King Abdulaziz bin Abdul Rahman Al Saud in 1932. This marked the birth of modern Saudi Arabia, with Riyadh as it capital, Arabic as its official language and Quran as its constitution.
Founding Day Celebrations
Saudis cherish their national occasions, taking pride in their national identity, history and heritage. The Founding Day celebrations are a revival of the Kingdom’s heritage and cultural legacy.
Saudis wear the traditional costumes, women paint their hands and fingertips with Henna, and families gather to enjoy traditional dishes and desserts. Furthermore, the celebrations involve Saudi folk dances and traditional songs.
Festivities kick off across the Kingdom’s regions, including events that showcase Saudi Arabia’s traditional crafts, culture and heritage.
