Following its successful debut in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the Museums Commission has announced that Art of the Kingdom: Poetic Illuminations—the first traveling group exhibition of Saudi contemporary artists—will open at the Saudi Arabia Museum of Contemporary Art at Jax District (SAMoCA@Jax) on February 24, 2025.
Running until April 24, 2025, the exhibition features works by 17 renowned Saudi artists spanning different generations, regions, and artistic disciplines. From paintings and installations to video art, the showcased pieces explore Saudi Arabia’s rich history, collective memory, and cultural traditions.
First unveiled at the historic Paço Imperial in Rio de Janeiro in November 2024, the exhibition drew 26,000 visitors. After its Riyadh edition, it will travel to the National Museum of China later in 2025 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Saudi-Chinese diplomatic relations.
The exhibition includes prominent Saudi artists, such as Muhannad Shono, Lina Gazzaz, Manal AlDowayan, Ayman Zedani, Moath Alofi, Ahmed Mater, Ahaad Alamoudi, Shadia Alem, Faisal Samra, Ayman Yossri Daydban, Daniah Al Saleh, Filwa Nazer, Sarah Brahim, Ahmad Angawi, Nasser Al Salem, Basmah Felemban, and Fatma Abdulhadi.
According to the Museums Commission, the Riyadh edition will introduce newly commissioned, site-specific works designed exclusively for SAMoCA@Jax, expanding on the themes presented in Brazil.
This exhibition highlights the diversity and ambition of contemporary Saudi artists, positioning their voices on the global cultural stage.
