“Cities of Poems”: ICESCO Launches Annual Poetry Competition

The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) has launched the annual poetry competition “Cities of Poems”, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

The competition aims basically at celebrating the capitals of culture in the Islamic world.

The 2024 edition will celebrate 3 cities, as follows:

  • Marrakesh, Morocco
  • Benghazi, Libya
  • Shusha, Azerbaijan

The competition plays a pivotal role in reviving the relationship between poetry and place, poetic and aesthetic documentation of the history and geography of cities.

It honors the symbols and civilizations of the capitals of culture in the Islamic world and further flourishes the literary and poetic movement.

A specialized committee from ISESCO and poets will evaluate the participating poems and select three winners for each city included in 2024 celebration.

The first-place winner will secure a total prize pool of 2000 US dollars, the second-place winner will receive 1500 US dollars, and the third-place winner will obtain 1000 US dollars.

Arab Poetry has a great and special significance in the Kingdom and all over the Arab world. The Kingdom has designated 2023 as the “Year of Arabic Poetry,” to celebrate the most fundamental component of the Arab culture. The initiative aims at reviving the rich history of Arabic poetry, recognizing its pivotal role in human civilization, and boosting the Kingdom’s status in preserving the cultural heritage of the Arab world.
