Strategic Depth: Board Games

By: Ranim Elgabakhngi

Board games pull people into spaces where choices really matter, planning, the ability to be flexible and thinking one step ahead are necessary. They’re not only a fun way to spend time but by playing them, we improve our thinking – among other things, we can get better at predicting outcomes, using what we have, and confronting difficulties directly.

Mastering Anticipation

Thinking ahead is a habit especially when one is playing the old-school styles of games. Since the players have to anticipate the moves of others, they simultaneously get to learn how to conceal their next move. This cycle of behavior eventually leads to individuals carefully considering the consequences of their actions. Gradually, fast reflexes are replaced with deliberate, well thought out actions which are directed at achieving success in the future.

Resource Allocation

Actually, there are only some moves, cards, or options that really make players think and choose carefully. Deciding whether to go for a bigger area, better defense, or just keep the resources for later is like daily people balancing their time, money, and effort. Players’ discernment keeps evolving game after game about the sacrifices to make – and the best places to allocate resources for getting the maximum results.

Adaptability Under Pressure

Plans rarely work out when confronted with actual gameplay. Alliances can spontaneously form; progress can suddenly come to a halt with each turn, a quick reassessment is needed. Going through a continuous flow of changes develops flexibility, changing our reactions on the spot rather than holding on to something that is no longer suitable.

Reading Opponents

At times, success is attained by just discerning subtle signals – people’s behavior, their choice of place. Patterns emerge if one observes closely; trickery is exposed by minor inconsistencies. With focus, the intentions of people become more evident. Such sensitivity develops people’s judgment of each other to be more accurate. It is equally effective even when not in competition. Abilities become more proficient in negotiations that lead to agreements. Persuasion becomes more effective as one can anticipate the other person’s feelings. Even disputes can be turned into something positive if the parties have a change of mind. Silent watching is the source of real skill.

Abstract thinking gets a physical form through board games – the players try out different decisions without any risk of losing in real life. Every time they play, they become a bit stronger in judgment and gradually figure out how to weigh the points of their choices in everyday life. The players make mistakes as if they were kids learning, but these mistakes teach them more than they regret. By repeating the process, they will develop decision-making so that it becomes more accurate and less hesitant.
