The Saudi Museums Commission has reopened Al Masmak Palace Museum in the historic Al-Dirah district in Riyadh, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
The reopening followed extensive renovations focused on upgrading the building, its restoration, and infrastructure development, to meet modern museum experience standards.
It also aligns with the Commission’s efforts to showcase Saudi Arabia’s historic landmarks that significantly contributed to the Kingdom’s history and cultural identity.
Al Masmak Palace is one of Riyadh’s most prominent historical attractions as one of the few buildings still intact from the early stages of the city’s foundation. It was built in 1865 during the reign of Imam Abdullah bin Faisal bin Turki to defend the city.
Al Masmak Palace stands out with its defensive design, featuring thick walls, rifle slits, and a single main entrance.

In 1902, King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud recaptured Al Masmak Palace during the historic “Battle of Riyadh,” which set the stage for the reunification of the Kingdom.
Since then, the building served various roles, including as an arms depot, before being transformed into a national museum chronicling this pivotal moment in Saudi history.
The museum was officially opened in 1995, housing a range of halls that recount the recapture of Riyadh and the journey of Saudi Arabia’s unification. To narrate these stories, it uses models, documents, and archival photos, in addition to visual presentations and educational content targeting various age groups.
The museum was temporarily closed for renovation. Its reopening underscores the Museums Commission‘s commitment to preserving Saudi Arabia’s heritage, culture and arts, as well as enhancing public awareness and offering rich cultural experiences that reflect the historical depth and national identity of the Kingdom.
