Apple has officially launched the Apple Upgrade program to replace the iPhone Upgrade Program, expanding the offering beyond iPhones to include Mac, iPad and Apple Watch.
The program allows users to lease Apple devices through monthly installments, with the option to upgrade to a newer model before the contract ends, buy the device at the end of the lease, or return it without owning it, according to a report published by appleinsider and reviewed by Arabia Business.
Subscription duration
Contract length varies by device:
- iPhone and Apple Watch: 12 or 24 months
- iPad and Mac: 24 or 36 months
The monthly installment amount depends on the device, storage capacity, contract length and any trade-in value from an old device.

What happens after contract ends?
At the end of the subscription, Apple gives the user three options:
- Return the device and end the contract with no further obligations
- Return the device and upgrade to a newer model, starting a new contract
- Pay the remaining amount to own the device outright
For example, if a user leases an iPhone 17e for 24 months at $17.99 per month, they will pay $431.76 over the contract term out of the full price of $599, leaving $167.24 if they want to keep the phone.
What if you don’t return the device?
Apple warns that keeping the device after the contract ends without returning it or paying the remaining balance could result in additional monthly fees, which may be higher than the original installment.
If six months pass after the contract ends with no action, the company may automatically collect the remaining amount to purchase the device.
Is the program cheaper than buying?
Although the monthly installments appear low compared with the full device price, Apple Upgrade is not a traditional installment plan; it is a leasing system.
During the contract, the user does not actually own the device, but pays to use it, while the purchase option is available only after paying the remaining value.
The program therefore suits people who prefer to upgrade their devices regularly, while direct purchase or traditional financing may be more cost-effective for those who plan to keep their device for many years.
