Major Menu Overhaul to Take Place across Saudi Arabia’s Restaurants
Restaurants across Saudi Arabia will undergo a big menu change, as they will be required to follow a new set of rules for a healthier and safer dining experience.
Starting from July 1, 2025, all food establishments and restaurants must list calorie counts, fat and sugar content, sodium levels, and clear allergen information in their menus, in line with a new regulation introduced by the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA).
Upon implementation, restaurants will have to display nutritional details on their menus, including placing a ‘saltshaker’ label next to high-sodium meals, disclosing the caffeine content of beverages, and indicating the estimated time required to burn off the calories from each menu item. The new rules will apply to all types of menus, whether physical or online, as well as online food ordering platforms.
The new regulations aim to provide a safer and healthier food options for diners and families, particularly those with certain food allergies. Moreover, they are designed to boost food transparency and help consumers to make informed nutritional decisions when dining out.
The initiative aligns with the SFDA efforts to promote healthier food options, promote a balanced lifestyle, and help consumers track their salt and caffeine intake against approved health recommendations. It also underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for citizens and residents, as part of the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.
