Saudi Artisans Master Pyrography, Preserve Al-Baha’s Heritage

Al-Baha region is generally known for its handicraft traditions and brilliant artisans who believe that practicing the crafts of their ancestors is the appropriate way to preserve their culture and heritage and to gain economic opportunities.

Pyrography is one of Saudi crafts that remains alive in Al-Baha thanks to creative artisans such as Mohammed bin Jamaan Al-Zahrani and Eida Ali Al-Zahrani, who became passionate about sculpting, painting and using calligraphic and pyrographic skills to create masterpieces.

“I used to watch my parents and grandparents practicing carpentry with their simple tools,” Mohammed told the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

Pyrography or wood burning is the free-handed art of decorating wood or other materials with a heated metal pen.

“Carving and pyrographing on wood needs skill, accuracy and patience, because there is no room for mistakes and the process is time-consuming,” Mohammed added.

The fascinating nature of Al-Baha and its exceptional rich history have inspired Eida and enthusiastically urged him to use modern painting techniques and pyrography to decorate wooden sculptures, doors and windows.

They mentioned that the Heritage Commission plays a pivotal role in supporting the rare handicrafts and providing the artisans with necessary skills, workshops, and events to boost their capabilities and unleash new avenues for them.
