Saudi Arabia’s ‘Year of the Camel’ Initiative: Honoring Cultural Legacy of Arabian Peninsula

Saudi Arabia is marking 2024 as the “Year of The Camel” to celebrate the camel’s unique cultural significance as the “ship of the desert.”
Throughout the year, the Ministry of Culture and its partners will highlight the camel’s importance through a range of cultural, literary, recreational, and sporting events.
For centuries, the camel has played a central role in the Arabian Peninsula, shaping its culture, society, and economy. Even in the face of modern progress, the camel remains a symbol of the region’s traditions and values.
“Year of The Camel”
In celebration of this enduring legacy, the ministry has launched the “Year of The Camel” with a series of events throughout the Kingdom. This initiative highlights the camel’s deep-rooted importance in Saudi life and delves into its cultural and historical significance.
At the ministry’s pavilion in City Walk, part of Jeddah Season, visitors can enjoy a unique exhibit with seven sections. The display highlights the camel’s cultural importance, traditional practices, historical legacy, and economic value, while promoting international cultural exchange.
In Madinah, the “Year of The Camel” pavilion at the Book Fair, which opened on Tuesday, features a 3D display highlighting camel characteristics, names, and their historical significance. The exhibit invites visitors to delve into the role of camels in Arabian culture and presents various camel breeds along with their distinct traits.
Saudi Arabia is making significant strides in advancing its camel industry by highlighting the importance of camels in providing food and livelihood.
The country’s initiatives involve boosting production, combating diseases through regular vaccinations, and enhancing the marketing of camel products to increase breeders’ income. Additionally, Saudi Arabia is collaborating with international organizations to modernize regulations and systems related to camel activities.

Saudi Arabia has partnered with the United Nations FAO to launch the “International Year of the Camelids – 2024.” This initiative emphasizes the Kingdom’s commitment to utilizing camels for food security and economic development. To spotlight the significance of camels in culture and society, Saudi Arabia has introduced the “Camel Studies Grant,” which covers six important areas related to these animals.
