The Diriyah Biennale Foundation has accomplished a historic achievement in the international art world by securing a medal at the renowned Art Basel Awards 2026.
According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the foundation earned a medal within the Museum and Institution category, a distinction that highlights its influence as a central hub for artistic growth in the Middle East and beyond.
This recognition serves as a powerful validation of the foundation’s success in elevating both contemporary and Islamic arts on the global stage.
Aya Al-Bakree, CEO of the Diriyah Biennale Foundation, noted that this achievement reflects a dedicated effort to bridge the gap between global artists, diverse communities, and transformative ideas. She remarked in a recent statement that the award confirms Saudi Arabia’s essential presence within the international cultural dialogue.
Established in 2025, the Art Basel Awards represent the first worldwide initiative dedicated to honoring excellence in the contemporary art sector. The selection committee evaluates nominees based on vision and innovation, skill and execution, engagement, and broader impact.
Since its inception in 2020 under the leadership of Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan, the Saudi Minister of Culture, the Diriyah Biennale Foundation has rapidly evolved into a cornerstone of the global creative landscape.
The foundation maintains a consistent cultural presence by alternating its flagship exhibitions annually. This cycle rotates between the Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale and the Islamic Arts Biennale held in Jeddah.
Beyond these major shows, the organization manages the JAX creative district, a specialized hub designed to foster deep cultural ties between the Kingdom and the international community.
Currently, the third edition of the Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale invites the public to explore its latest theme, “In Interludes and Transitions,” with the exhibition receiving visitors until May 2, 2026.
