The 16th edition of the Malmö Arab Film Festival spotlights the rapid ascent of Saudi film on the global stage through its dedicated Arabian Nights program.
Sponsored by the Saudi Film Nights initiative, this showcase highlights the Kingdom’s cinematic evolution during the festival’s primary run from April 10 to April 16, 2026, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
In light of this, Saudi Film Commission CEO Abdullah Al-Qahtani described the participation as a strategic platform intended to strengthen the presence of Saudi cinema across Europe.
He emphasized that the event introduces national talents to a diverse international audience while providing a vital opportunity to build high-level partnerships with industry decision-makers.
The “Arab Nights” program, launched by the Saudi Film Commission in collaboration with the Malmö Arab Film Festival as part of its participation in the festival, represents a continuation of its efforts to expand the international presence of Saudi films.

The Arabian Nights program runs from April 7-17, 2026. It features a curated collection of Saudi works headlined by Shahad Ameen’s film Hijra, which serves as the Kingdom’s official 2026 Oscar submission.
The lineup also includes Salma and the Moon by Ahd Kamel, The Constraint by Hossam El-Helwah, Ambulance by Colin Teague, and A Matter of Life and Death by Anas Ba-Tahaf. These films are part of a broader cinematic tour extending beyond Sweden to include Denmark, Finland, and Norway.
In a significant tribute to the roots of the industry, the festival is honoring renowned filmmaker Abdullah Al-Muheisen for his pivotal role in the emergence of Saudi cinema. This recognition includes a special screening of his landmark documentary, Assassination of a City, alongside a dedicated Masterclass where Al-Muheisen discusses his extensive artistic journey and cinematic philosophy.
Furthermore, the festival facilitates active engagement between Saudi directors, producers, and writers through specialized panel discussions held on the sidelines of the event.
These sessions aim to foster cultural dialogue, expand distribution opportunities, and build new production partnerships to ensure the sustainable growth and global reach of the Saudi film sector.
