Nestled in the heart of Abha, Souq Al Thulatha (Tuesday Market) holds deep historical, cultural, social, and economic significance for the Aseer region. As one of the most renowned traditional markets, it has become a cherished destination for visitors and heritage enthusiasts, offering an authentic glimpse into the region’s rich traditions through its vibrant local community.
During a visit to the market, the Saudi Press Agency spoke with Dr. Abdullah Al Musa, a researcher, historian, and author, who explained that the market derives its name from the day it is held each week. In the past, it served as more than just a marketplace—it was a central gathering point for traders, buyers, and community leaders. Beyond commerce, it provided a venue for exchanging weather updates, discussing trade developments, and even resolving social and economic disputes through local councils.
Dr. Al Musa emphasized the market’s continued role in strengthening the region’s economy and tourism. It attracts both locals and visitors seeking essential goods and handcrafted items. Among these, women artisans uphold a long-standing tradition of crafting exquisite necklaces from precious stones and silver.
Vendor Ahmed Abdullah highlighted the market’s diverse offerings, which include traditional clothing, handicrafts, jewelry, cooking utensils, aromatic herbs, various types of honey and ghee, as well as agricultural and fishing equipment—all catering to the varied needs of its visitors.
Finally, Souq Al Thulatha remains a living testament to Abha’s heritage, drawing people together through commerce, craftsmanship, and community.
