The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced the official approval for participation in the “Between Them” exhibition in Jeddah, showcasing several archaeological pieces from the collection of the Museum of Islamic Art in Cairo. These items will be displayed in the pilgrims’ hall in Jeddah for 120 days. This decision followed the approval of the External Exhibitions Committee of the Ministry of Tourism, which is responsible for international exhibitions.
Egypt had participated in the “Half of the Mosque” exhibition in November 2020, which lasted for two years and focused on the origins and history of the mosque. The exhibition showcased approximately 130 artifacts from various parts of the Islamic world, featuring masterpieces of Islamic art related to mosques. These pieces reflect the progress and prosperity achieved by Islamic civilization and its arts.
Egypt participated in this exhibition with 84 artifacts from the collections of the Museum of Islamic Art in Cairo, which are associated with mosques to support their function, such as pulpits, mihrabs, Quran stands, as well as lighting tools like lanterns, chandeliers, and torches. These pieces, which vary in shape and style, highlight the creativity and artistic skill of the Muslim artist, according to “Raihan.”
It is scheduled that artifacts from the collection of the Museum of Islamic Art will participate in the exhibition “And Between Them” at the Hajj Hall in Jeddah for a duration of four months. The exhibition will feature various artifacts related to the Hajj and the ancient overland pilgrimage route through central Sinai to the Aqaba fortress in Jordan, and from there to the Hijaz region.
It is worth noting that the Museum of Islamic Art in Cairo was established in 1903 during the reign of Khedive Abbas Hilmi II. It houses 100,000 artifacts from different eras and countries, including India, China, Iran, the Arabian Peninsula, the Levant, Egypt, North Africa, and Andalusia. The museum was damaged in 2014, but it was restored and reopened in 2017.
