The dwarf honey bee (Apis florea) has recently appeared in various areas of Arar, a city in Saudi Arabia’s Northern Borders region. Experts link this development to the increase in nature reserves and the revival of diverse native plant species in the region, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
The dwarf bee, often seen alongside larger bee species such as the giant honey bee and the eastern honey bee, creates small, open-air combs that are no bigger than the size of a human palm. According to SPA, these combs produce only a modest amount of honey, typically under 500 grams.
Despite their small size, dwarf bees are renowned for their impressive ability to endure extreme heat, often thriving in temperatures above 50 degrees Celsius. This distinctive trait sets them apart from other bee species and makes them particularly well-adapted to low-lying regions, the news agency reported.
