Discover Al Wahba: Breathtaking Adventure in Saudi Arabia’s Mesmerizing Milky Crater

Al Wahba Crater is one of the most dramatic and thrilling natural wonders in the middle of the Kingdom’s desert.
Located 250 kilometers from the city Taif, the crater measures 1.3 kilometers across and 200 meters deep.

How Was the Crater Formed?
Al Wahba Crater was created 1.14 million years ago as a result of a volcanic eruption.
In the 1960s, geologists discovered that the crater is in fact a maar crater which means that it was part of a volcanic eruption with lava from a nearby volcano came into contact with underground water. Consequently, this contact caused an explosion forming the final shape of the crater.
The crater has a vibrant quicksand, and the bottom is covered in sodium phosphate that appeared in the surface during rainfall causing a stunning milky scene.

What to Do at the Crater?
There are several activities that tourists and visitors can do at the crater.
The area contains an exceptional museum showcasing the unique history of the museum and what it is made up of.
It is recommended to take a look at the museum before starting the adventure just to be fully aware of the structure and geology of the place
Furthermore, the area has various appropriate spots to enjoy the wonderful scenery and to have a delicious meal while being fully immersed in the charming beauty of the place.
Tourists also can visit the lava fields nearby and have a look at the base and back up of the crater.

Al Wahba Crater Weather
The weather is mainly hot. That is why it is better to visit the crater during winter. It is much better to start the trip early in the morning or late in the evening.
Camping at Al Wahba Crater

To have a perfect morning hiking into the crater, it is preferable to camp near the crater the night before.
The area is so fascinating for those who find therapy in setting on the sand, looking at the stars, away from people and chaotic world, just you and the impressive panoramic view.

Hiking into the Crater
For hikers and campers, camping at the crater is an amazing challenge.
The walls around the entire crater are very steep.
However, there is a single rough walking path leading into the basin.
It takes about 45 minutes to an hour to go down and roughly double that to get back up again.
For tourists, it is recommended to take assistance from a professional camping agency to ensure safety and comfort during the trip.

There are two paths:
Primary Hiking Path
This is the entry to the primary path in and out of the crater. It is a bit bumpy, but firm so it is accessible even with a 2WD car.
Advanced Hiking Path
There is also a more advanced route out of the crater.
This route will allow visitors to see a green oasis with underground water and green trees. It is only for advanced hikers.

How to Get to Al Wahba Crater?
The crater is only 250 km away from Taif. It takes four hours by car from Jeddah.
Once you reach the location, there is a paved road leading to the crater and can be easily reached by the car.
Fortunately, rental cars are available as it is a popular tourist attraction.
