Largest Order in its History… Saudi Group Studying Purchase of 150 Aircraft

Bloomberg reported that Saudi Group, which includes Saudia and flyadeal, is advancing plans for a new, massive aircraft order aimed at expanding the fleet and replacing older planes over the next decade.

The group’s Executive Vice-President for Strategy and Acting CEO of flyadeal said the group has completed its assessment of future aircraft needs, and that the tender process will begin once board approval is obtained.

Sanjeev Kapoor did not disclose the size of the order, but Bloomberg reported in February that the group held preliminary talks with Boeing and Airbus to buy at least 150 single-aisle and wide-body aircraft, in a deal that could become the largest in its history.

Last May, Saudi Airlines Group announced it had taken delivery of its first long-range narrow-body Airbus A321XLR, the first time this aircraft type has joined its fleet and the first for any airline in the Middle East and Africa region.

Saudia is scheduled to receive a total of 15 A321XLR aircraft by 2027. These will help support national targets linked to Saudi Vision 2030 in tourism, entertainment, sport and serving the guests of Allah, particularly major events to be hosted in the Kingdom in the coming years, including the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, Expo 2030 and the 2034 FIFA World Cup finals.

The group said this move builds on Saudia’s recent deal with Airbus to purchase 105 confirmed aircraft.
