Rising high from Al-Ahsa Oasis, Al-Qarah Mountain stands as one of Saudi Arabia’s most captivating natural wonders.
Al-Qarah Mountain is located in Al-Ahsa Governorate in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, boasting unique geological formations and mysterious caves that draw the interest of visitors from all over the world.
Al-Qarah Mountain: A Geological Landmark
Rising 75 meters above the breathtaking landscape of Al-Ahsa Oasis, Al-Qarah Mountain is a high mesa made of sandstone, clay, and marl that was formed over millions of years as a result of geological forces such as water erosion, abrasion, and seismic activity.

This has given the mountain distinctive features, including mushroom-like rock formations, narrow canyons, and an extraordinary network of caves and passageways.
Al-Qarah Mountain is surrounded by four historic villages: Al-Twaitheer, Al-Dalwah, Al-Tuhaymiya, and Al-Qarah, from which the mountain got its name. Moreover, the mountain overlooks the charming Al-Ahsa Oasis – a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its vast palm tree plantations – offering stunning views of palm groves and orchards.
Caves Network
The mountain is distinguished by its extraordinary network of caves, involving 28 narrow, towering caverns, stretching over 1.5 kilometers. These caves maintain a moderate temperature throughout the year, staying cool in the summer and warm in the winter, thus turning Al-Qarah Mountain to an archaeological and tourist destination.

The most famous caves include Al-Nashab Cave, Ghar Al-Eid, Ghar Um Aljamajem, Bu Saleh, An Naqa, Al-Mua’adhamah, and Al-Maheub caves. These caves historically served as a refuge for travelers on ancient caravan routes.
Now they have become a popular tourist attraction with organized tours that highlight its natural and cultural history. Some caves host pottery workshops, showcasing the authenticity of Al-Ahsa’s traditional handicrafts.
Land of Civilizations
As one of the key landmarks of Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia has launched the “Land of Civilizations” project to enhance the tourism infrastructure of Al-Qarah Mountain. The project includes the renovation of the main cave, installing lighting systems, leveling grounds, establishing a history museum, as well as constructing a stepped theater, cafes, and shops.

The Land of Civilizations Museum offers a glimpse into Al-Qarah Mountain history, geological features, and cultural significance, as well as detailed information about Al-Ahsa’s history, heritage and natural beauty.
