Tokyo Governor Commends Economic Ties with Saudi Arabia

Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko has praised the evolving significance of strengthening economic ties with Saudi Arabia and capturing Saudi investment to the Japanese capital ahead of her upcoming trip to the Middle East later this month, according to Arab News.

“We are currently in the midst of attracting investors to Saudi Arabia, a country that is enthusiastic about investing, so I think it is extremely valuable to promote Tokyo there,” Yuriko said.

Koike also mentioned Riyadh’s Future Cities Initiative, noting that it has attracted great international attention for its ability to bring together investors, innovators, and financial strategists under one umbrella.

“To give you an idea, people like Elon Musk have attended this event,” she said. “And it attracts roughly 5,000 people, making it a sort of ‘Davos in the desert.’ At these events, I hope to firmly promote Tokyo’s financial market and engage in investor relations.”

Koike’s agenda also features the advancement of Japan’s renowned soft power, such as anime and manga. In this context, she will share the stage with Takahashi Yoichi, the creator of Captain Tsubasa—known across the Middle East as Captain Majid.

She noted that Japan’s anime industry and its related content are estimated to have an economic impact of around 8 trillion yen.

“I hope to promote Tokyo’s initiatives and appeal, and foster cooperation between cities,” she added.

During her visit, Koike will also conduct business-matching opportunities for Tokyo-based small and medium-sized enterprises and startups in Riyadh and Kuwait, while showcasing the capital’s advanced technologies to local government officials and business leaders.
