After years of decline that endangered its existence, the iconic Seiyun Palace in Hadhramaut, eastern Yemen, is being meticulously restored under the leadership of the Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen (SDRPY). This major initiative aims to revive the palace’s original grandeur and preserve its place as a cherished cultural and architectural landmark.
Symbol of Yemeni Heritage
Seiyun Palace stands as a striking example of traditional Yemeni architecture, celebrated for its historical, cultural, and aesthetic significance. Once featured on Yemen’s national currency, the palace has long symbolized the nation’s rich heritage.
Originally constructed as a fortified structure to defend the city of Seiyun, the palace evolved over time into the official residence of the sultans of the Kathiri state, who once governed the Wadi Hadhramaut region.

From Collapse to Commitment
Despite its importance, the palace suffered extensive deterioration due to age and environmental factors. The situation became critical in 2022 when a significant portion of its outer wall collapsed, raising alarm over the structure’s future. The incident spurred urgent calls from the local community and authorities for immediate restoration efforts.
In response to a request from the Yemeni government, SDRPY initiated a comprehensive restoration project to safeguard the palace. Funded by SDRPY, the project is being implemented by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in collaboration with the Saudi Ministry of Culture and Yemen’s General Organization of Antiquities and Museums. Yemen’s Social Fund for Development is also providing technical and logistical support.
Reviving Palace’s Glory
The restoration work has included the reconstruction of the collapsed wall and reinforcement of the palace’s core mudbrick structures. Skilled artisans have worked to restore intricate wooden ceilings, carved doors, and decorative windows—hallmarks of Yemeni craftsmanship. The project also emphasized the preservation of the palace’s unique architectural features, including traditional motifs and wall inscriptions. Local engineers and technicians received specialized training to ensure sustainable upkeep in the future.

Moreover, this initiative marks a significant contribution to the preservation of Yemen’s cultural heritage and the revitalization of Hadhramaut. Once again, the palace is prepared to receive visitors throughout the year and serve as a venue for cultural events, reinforcing its status as a major tourism and heritage site.
The Seiyun Palace restoration is one of 264 development projects spearheaded by SDRPY across Yemen. These initiatives span vital sectors including education, healthcare, transportation, energy, water, agriculture, fisheries, institutional development, and integrated development programs, reflecting SDRPY’s broader commitment to supporting stability and growth in the country.
