Iraqi musician and renowned oud player Naseer Shamma has held a significant discussion about music during the Jeddah Book Fair.
Titled “Music Stylistically,” the discussion centered on the impact of climate and environment on musical expression, Arab News reported. Led by moderator Bader Al-Hamoud, the talk delved into the notable differences between coastal and mountainous music.
Shamma elucidated that geography, architecture, and economic factors can play a pivotal role in shaping a community’s musical identity and heritage. “Just as our senses possess memory and require care to maintain their function, music demands a period of maturation, much like the cycle of life,” he added.

The musician indicated that some of his compositions have taken years to perfect before being shared. This is due to his strong belief that music that resonates for two decades achieves a lasting impact.
The talk also tackled the therapeutic power of music with Shamma stating that music can accelerate wound healing by up to 30%. Consequently, music therapy has become a recognized academic field.
The seminar was part of the Jeddah Book Fair that will run until Dec. 21 under the organization of the Literature, Publishing and Translation Commission. The fair features more than 450 pavilions, with the participation of over 1,000 publishing houses and agencies from 22 countries.
