Arab Models, Singers Rally Behind National Teams During FIFA World Cup

Arab celebrities have been expressing their support for national teams at the FIFA World Cup through social media, with Instagram emerging as a key platform for fans across the region to follow and celebrate their sides in the tournament.

Among the most visible figures is Palestinian Chilean singer Elyanna, who has drawn significant attention throughout the competition. The 24-year-old performer appeared at Canada’s opening ceremony in Toronto, sharing the stage with a lineup of international artists as the tournament began across North America. Her appearance added to a growing international profile that includes becoming the first artist to perform a full set in Arabic at Coachella in 2023, while continuing to center Arabic-language music in her work.

 

Beyond her stage performances, Elyanna has used social media to highlight Arab participation in the tournament, joining other regional figures in publicly supporting their national teams. On Wednesday, she posted on Instagram celebrating Iraq’s goal against Norway, in a match that ultimately ended in a 4–1 defeat for Iraq.

Support for Jordan has also been visible online from Palestinian Jordanian singer Zeyne and Jordanian actor Andria Tayeh, both of whom have shared posts backing the national team during its World Cup campaign.

Jordan fell 3–1 to Austria in Group J, but forward Ali Olwan’s goal—Jordan’s first ever at a World Cup—was widely celebrated as a milestone. Tayeh marked the moment on Instagram Stories, writing: “We’re proud of you no matter the result. You’ve made us proud, and hopefully the next one will be even better.”

Meanwhile, Moroccan Dutch Egyptian model Imaan Hammam has continued to publicly support Morocco, as she has in previous international tournaments. Hammam, who was among those celebrating Morocco’s historic run to the semifinals of the 2022 World Cup, has remained vocal in her backing of the national team.

Morocco entered the tournament carrying heightened expectations after becoming the first Arab and African nation to reach the World Cup semifinals four years ago.

Following Morocco’s draw with Brazil, Hammam posted: “We showed the world who we are. So proud of this team. To the players, keep making us proud!!”
